A pregnant pause ensued as Alan Jennings shared a conception -- Where did... --
with Al Tufano on 19 Nov 93 09:22:
AJ> What do you really know or believe about what was the "first cause?"
Credo que: The first cause is a Great Mystery, since cause must preceed
effect in time and since time, in this case, does not exist until effect, the
cause is a matter of speculation only. The effect would appear to be the Big
Bang, since it's echoes persist and this theory has so far been predictive. I
keep hoping that the astronomers find enough mass to stop the expansion (and
consequently start the next Big Bang in train), as recycling is a lot more
appealing to me than simply running down. In any event, the likelihood of
anyone being so hardy as to survive to see either is pretty remote, and my
preferences in the matter consequently silly.
It is the virtue of such speculation that our silliness is reaffirmed for
us. Without silliness, we are nothing.
