SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) _ A self-proclaimed minister was indicted
Friday for allegedly lying to grand jurors about real estate
purchases made for a suspected cocaine kingpin.
Roosevelt Taylor Jr., 42, was named in a six-count federal
grand jury indictment charging him with perjury in the
investigation of alleged Oakland cocaine dealer Rudy Henderson.
Henderson and nine others were indicted last year on 40 counts
in an alleged cocaine conspiracy and are awaiting trial.
U.S. Magistrate Joan Brennan ordered bail set at $100,000 for
Taylor.
Taylor, who says he is minister of Acts Full Gospel Church of
Oakland, allegedly acted as a real estate agent for Henderson in
the purchase of a palatial Sonoma County residence estimated at
$1 million in value, according to U.S. Attorney Joseph
Russoniello.
The indictment says Taylor lied to grand jurors about his role
in the 1984 purchase of the property.
He told grand jurors he had no part in the transaction,
according to the indictment.
Taylor worked at the time for Chabot Realty in Oakland,
according to the indictment.
A week ago, Taylor was quoted in a San Francisco newspaper
saying he is a minister who runs a drug rehabilitation program in
Oakland.
He claimed in the article about the "crack" problem that he
was one of the early pioneers in the creation of "crack" in the
San Francisco Bay area in the late 1970s.
Crack is a processed form of cocaine. The cocaine powder is
made into small rocks by mixing it with baking soda or highly
flammable ether.
The "crack" can then be smoked.
Taylor faces a maximum of 30 years in prison and a $1.5
million fine if convicted on the perjury charges.
