All-Music Guide Biography
During the 70s, ABBA's slick light Euro-pop made them one of the
world's most successful acts, particularly outside of America. Each
of the members had already enjoyed some professional success,
previous to the band's formation. The spirited debut single,
"Waterloo," won ABBA much recognition when they won the 1974
Eurovision Song Contest. From there, ABBA scored a seemingly endless
string of predominately bouncy pop hits, featuring well-crafted
catchy melodies (some quite good) and the band's distinctive (but
occasionally shrill) multilayered vocals, which highlighted female
singers Agnetha Ulvaeu and Anni-Frid Lyngstad-Fredriksson.,Of the 14
American Top 40 pop hits, "Dancing Queen" was ABBA's biggest, hitting
