All-Music Guide Biography
Boston's Aerosmith is a riff-heavy American synthesis of Led Zepplin,
the Yardbirds, and the Rolling Stones. During their rise to
prominence as album rock kings in the mid 70s, Aerosmith managed to
produce an impressive collection of hard-rock classics like "Dream
On," "Walk This Way," "Back in the Saddle," and "Sweet Emotion.",By
the end of the 70s, FM album-rock had become a cynical stale format,
and arena rock groups like Aerosmith became the subject of derision
among arbiters of the ascending punk and new-wave movements. By then,
ensuing personal conflicts and drug problems had weakened Aerosmith's
creative power, anyway.,Nevertheless, Aerosmith had the good fortune
to make the most of a second chance at success. This was fueled by
two very different sources. Rap artists Run-DMC scored a huge hit
version of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" in 1986, and the rise of FM
classic-rock radio fed a market nostalgic for something more edgy and
organic than synth-pop acts like Tears for Fears, Wham!, and Duran
Duran.,The newly sober Aerosmith seized the moment and produced two
highly successful albums with PERMANENT VACATION and PUMP, which
ranks with ROCKS as their best work. ~ Rick Clark

The debut from this Boston band shows a sensitive side with their
best-known ballad, "Dream On." But the focus remains on it's raw,
aggressive garage-rock style amply displayed on "Mama Kin," "One Way

Early reports on GET A GRIP had the label forcing Aerosmith back into
the studio to add some hits to the album. It's unclear what tracks
were tinkered with on the final version of GET A GRIP, but the end
result is a fitfully entertaining album. The problem is that Aerosmith
wants it both ways -- it wants artistic respect (hence, "Living on the
Edge") while keeping adolescent fans in their corner ("Get a Grip" and
"Eat the Rich"). It's a studied performance -- it sounds like what an
Aerosmith album should sound like, which is why parts of it tend to be
boring. But there ARE parts of the album that sound good ("Eat the
Rich," in particular) and it should satisfy fans, even if it isn't as
strong as ROCKS, TOYS IN THE ATTIC, or PUMP. ~ All-Music Guide
Quite frankly, I was surprised by the four stars myself, but in the
field of commercial, accessible hard rock with a sting, Aerosmith
continues to write the book. These Boston vets may show a lot of
treadwear in their faces, but they continue to build and refine on the
foundation of previous post-rehab releases PERMANENT VACATION and PUMP
IT UP. Memorable songs, razor-sharp playing and Steve Tyler's voice in
peak gnarly form - "Get A Grip's" combo of energy and chops makes most
of today's hard rock whiz-kids sound like they're the washed up old
fogeys. The group continues to expand on the streetlevel sociology of
PUMP'S "Janie's Got A Gun" with the triad "Eat The Rich", "Line Up",
and single "Livin' On The Edge". Not that you'd want to quote the
lyrics as poetry or anything, but - hey - at least the guys aren't
always thinking below the waist anymore. Now if they could only wean
themselves of the juvenile, sexist videos... ~Roch Parisien

The package states that this is "110 minutes of video that your mother
doesn't want you to see." In spite of the implications, THE MAKING OF
PUMP is merely a document of a band slogging through the writing and
recording (and re-writing and re-recording) process of making an
album. Some of it is fascinating, particularly the squabbles among the
band members, and the scenes in which producer Bruce Fairburn and A&R
man John Koladner are giving guidance. At close to two hours, THE
MAKING OF PUMP might get a little long, but studio junkies and
hardcore fans of the band will like it. Videos of "The Other Side" and
"What It Takes" are included, but this is not a collection of their
videos. ~ Rick Clark
