All-Music Guide Biography
Ex-Zombies keyboardist Rod Argent (b June 14, 1945) formed Argent in
1969. Like the Zombies, Argent was capable of some excellent melodies
even when indulging in more extended art-rock forays. Rod Argent had
as many chops as Keith Emerson, able to pull out all the stops when
needed, but he seemed to have a greater understanding of the value of
economy in note selection. Guitarist Russ Ballard (b Oct 31, 1947)
was equally tasty, and Argent's rhythm section, bassist Jim Rodford
(b July 7, 1945) and drummer Rob Henrit (b May 2, 1945), delivered
all the right fire and dynamics. Their self-titled debut and
sophomore effort RING OF HANDS are standouts.,Argent's one huge hit,
"Hold Your Head Up," went to #1. After Argent's demise, Ballard went
on to a moderately successful solo career. Both Ballard and Argent
became successful producers. Henrit and Rodford went on to join the
