³LONDON (AUG. 1) - The age of the dinosaur was brought to an ³
³abrupt end by a cataclysmic collision between the planet    ³
³Earth and a massive meteorite 65 million years ago, Nature  ³
³magazine said Thursday.                                     ³

³The dinosaur died, probably along with hundreds of other    ³
³species, as a result of the collision, which threw up huge  ³
³clouds of dust and debris, blotting out the sun and causing ³
³temperatures to nose-dive.                                  ³

³The resulting "impact winter" also killed thousands of      ³
³plants as temperatures fell from an average of 19 degrees   ³
³centigrade to -10 degrees, according to the article by Jack ³
³Wolfe of the U.S. Geological Survey.                        ³

³Wolfe's research, based on a geological survey of an ancient³
³lily pond in Wyoming, provided startling new evidence in    ³
³support of a long-held theory of why the dinosaur, the      ³
³largest creature ever to walk on Earth, suddenly            ³
³disappeared, Nature said.                                   ³

³Analysis of hundreds of plant remains preserved at the site ³
