To the Editor:
While reading Greg Beaubien's article, "Second Thoughts"
(Nov. 30, Tempo), several questions occurred to me.
In particular, I must wonder if Dr. Braun is actually
helping his patients. He admits that "not all of his
patients' claims of murder are true," but the article begins
with a startling story which is presented as if it is, in
fact, true. While Braun apparently does not trust the
police, my first response to a story like this is to ask if
he has bothered to try to gather evidence: The woman claims
she saw her uncle killed by her father, and that she then
helped dispose of the body. Has anybody bothered to check
if the woman did, indeed have an uncle who disappeared in
the correct time frame? Did they check to see if there was
a body buried where she claimed it was? Were any of the
portions of her "memories" checked out at all?
As the author correctly states, there must be a huge,
undetected conspiracy if we believe Braun and his patients.
Braun says that we're in trouble if even 10 percent of the
claims are true. Since there isn't even evidence for those
10 percent, I find it difficult to figure out how he
concludes that there is a "kernel of truth" to this huge
satanic conspiracy.
