The Ethnologue is a catalog of the world's languages including information
on alternate names, number of speakers, location, dialects, linguistic
affiliation, and other sociolinguistic and demographic information.
Please note that this is not the latest edition of the Ethnologue, which
is the twelfth edition. We intend eventually to have the twelfth edition
available for on-line searching.
Try searching for a language or language family name, a country, or area.
Be aware, though, that if you search for a very broad term such as
"austronesian" or "africa" that you will have to wait a long time for a
very large number of hits to be returned. It's better to choose a
narrower search.
You can also compose complex (boolean) searches using AND, OR, and NOT.
for example, searching for "philippines AND creole" will return entries
for the creole languages in the Philippines. The query "africa NOT french"
will return all entries for Africa which do not mention French.
