³STUDY BACKS U.S. THEORY THAT HUMANS DESCENDED FROM AN       ³

³WASHINGTON (SEPT. 27) DPA - A team of U.S. researchers      ³
³Thursday said they had found important new evidence to back ³
³up a theory that all humans originated from one African     ³
³woman around 200,000 years ago.                             ³

³Anthropologists from Pennsylvania State University and the  ³
³University of California in Berkeley said the ''strongest   ³
³confirmation yet'' had come from an analysis of the genetic ³
³material DNA.                                               ³

³The scientists contructed a ''tree of evolution'' after     ³
³tracing DNA from 189 people in various parts of the world   ³
³back to a single ancestor, a woman who they estimate lived  ³
³between 166,000 and 249,000 years ago.                      ³

³The results lend further weight to a U.S. theory on African ³
³origin put forward in 1987.                                 ³

³The researchers call the common ancestor ''Eve'' and say she³
³probably lived in sub-Saharan Africa. Her people were dark- ³
³skinned, shorter and stocker than modern humans, said co-   ³
³author of the 1987 study, Mark Stoneking.                   ³
