Re: RCC Sues Insurance Companies
ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SUES FOR INSURANCE
During the week of December 19-23, 1994, the Roman Catholic
Archdiocese of Milwaukee sued fourteen insurance companies
because they refused to pay in nine sexual misconduct cases
involving priests.
The companies, which include both British and American insurers,
maintain that the sexual misconduct was intentional on the part
of the diocese and not insured because the church hierarchy knew
of the sexual misconduct and did not try to prevent it.
The archdiocese is seeking compensatory damages for settlements,
legal fees, and punitive damages for alleged breach of contract.
No civil case against the diocese involving priests' sexual
misconduct has gone to trial in the Milwaukee area, but
settlements have been reached in others.
