School's ban on Halloween hadn't ghost of a chance
{AP} Pine Island -- Teachers at an elementary school voted to reverse
their ban on a Halloween party after parents gathered hundreds of
signatures protesting the ban.
The unanimous decision came Monday at a faculty meeting at Pine Island
Elementary School, one week after the holiday was banned at the school
in this small fishing community.
Officials said then the school would instead celebrate a Nov. 1 fall
festival, because of the protests from religious leaders who believe
Halloween is satanic [sic].
"Everybody will not be happy that we are going back and restoring
Halloween in the schedule," Principal Douglas Mosher said.
The plan is to celebrate the fall festival Oct. 31, and then allow
parents to host an after-school Halloween party at school, Mosher said.
Elsie Stearns was among parents circulating petitions.
"Kids are only kids for so long, and by taking Halloween out of the
schools, you would probably have a lot more of them out on the street
trick-or-treating," she said. "It's safer to have it in the school."
But Pastor John Kirby of the Free Spirit Revival Center says Halloween
is evil.
"My vote would be to cancel Halloween," he said.
