AIP IMPLEMENTS LISTSERVER FOR PEN MAILING LIST
AIP has implemented a Listserver, an automatic tool to manage the
electronic mailing list for PEN.  From now on, individuals will be
able to add and delete their own email addresses from the PEN
distribution list.  Please follow the instructions below to add or
delete yourself, and pass them along to colleagues who might also
wish to receive PEN.
(PLEASE NOTE:  If you received this message, you are already on the
listserver's PEN mailing list and do NOT need to add yourself!)

INSTRUCTIONS
Your email message should be sent to:  listserv@aip.org
Leave the "Subject:" line blank.

As the body of the message, the following commands should be used:

add pen					The listserver will read the email
					address to be added from your message
					header.  The command "subscribe" may
					also be used in place of "add".

add  pen			If you want to add an address for
					someone else, or an address other
					than the one you are using to send
					the message, you may use this three-
					field command.

help					If you do not have the instructions
					handy, type this command and the
					listserver will respond with
					instructions.

faq pen					This command will respond with brief
					information (frequently asked
					questions) about PEN.

delete pen				The listserver will read the email
					address to be deleted from your
					message header.  The command
					"unsubscribe" may also be used in
					place of "delete".

NOTE:  To protect against unauthorized deletions, the listserver
DOES NOT allow you to delete any address other than the one in the
header of your message.  To have a different address deleted (for
example, if you have moved and your previous account has been
closed down), please send a note to pen-listserv-manager@aip.org,
and we will take care of it for you.

GOPHER, FTP ARCHIVES CREATED FOR PEN
As a service to our readers, AIP has set up an archive for back
issues of PEN.  It can be accessed either via a gopher program, or
through anonymous file transfer protocol (ftp), the standard
Internet method for transferring files.  The archive contains PENs
from the beginning of 1993 through the most recent issue.

For those readers with access to a gopher, use your gopher program
to connect to "pinet.aip.org", and you will see the PEN archives as
menu choice #4:

For those readers unable to use a gopher, ftp to "pinet.aip.org",
and follow the directions below:

1)	Login as "anonymous" and use your full e-mail address as the
	password

2)	Type the Change Directory command:  "cd archives/pen"

3)	View the README file that resides there for PEN by typing: 
	"get README.PEN |more" or "get README.PEN -" (to scroll it)

4)	Change the directory to the year you are interested in (1993
	or 1994):  ftp>  cd 1994

5)	List the files on the directory chosen by entering "ls" or
	"dir":  ftp>  ls

6A)	To simply view an issue of PEN on your screen, use the
	command:  "get penYY.MMM# |more", where YY is the last two
	digits of the year, MMM are the first three letters of the
	month, and # is the issue number (1 or 2).  For example:
	ftp>  get pen94.apr2 |more

6B)	To scroll an issue on your screen, use instead "get	
	penYY.MMM# - ":  ftp>  get pen94.apr2 -

6C)	To transfer the issue to your home directory, use the command
	"get penYY.MMM#".  This will automatically place the file in
	your home directory.  For example:  ftp>  get pen94.apr2

7)	When finished, type "quit" to leave the AIP ftp server
