SESSIONS BOWS OUT OF APPEARANCE ON BRINKLEY SHOW
Washington (AP) - FBI Director William Sessions didn't show for a
scheduled appearance on ABC's "This Week With David Brinkley" on Sunday to
discuss the Waco cult disaster.
Brinkley, in opening the program, said the Justice Department had ordered
Sessions, who is fighting to keep his job amid charges of improprieties, not
to appear. "We do not know why," Brinkley added.
Then, at the conclusion of the show, presumably after some contact with
Sessions, Brinkley said the FBI director "wants us to know that it was his
idea not to come today, and he was no ordered to do so."
FBI spokesman Barry Smith said the appearance had not yet been firmed up,
and that the decision to bow out was "Director Session's decision and his
decision alone."
"He felt at this point in time it would be inappropriate to appear and
discuss the [Waco cult] issues given that it might adversely impact any
persecution of the case," said Smith in a telephone interview.
