- Broker Comment: In the 2008-2013 recession, we were in the process of buying our construction business. We had several years of losses, but knew the business would recover. We owned two houses that we could not sell and were having trouble making the mortgage payments since we weren’t making any income. We made the choice to return one of the houses to the bank and live in our rental house. The house was resold by the bank. Our business has improved and we now have plenty of equity in our house. We learned our lesson about overextending!
