On June 20th, 2018, I discovered BetterHelp through a well-known YouTube content creator Aaron Marino or “alpha m”. Both Marino’s and BetterHelp’s initial advertisement stated weekly payments of $65 USD, along with financial support, which I did seek to utilize. Upon registration of the membership, which was done when I replied to my assigned counselor concerning my issues, $214.64 CAD was immediately withdrawn from my bank account. Unfortunately, payment was done through a debit card, which meant that I couldn’t cancel the transaction nor reverse it through my bank. Upon realization of being charged such an incredibly high lump sum payment, I decided to cancel my membership, and before I did that, I even contacted my assigned counselor. The reason being is that I have heard from other complaints that they supposedly needed their counselor to provide them with a special URL in order to complete the cancellation of counselling services. I personally didn’t have to go through any of that because I simply hit the cancel membership option within the settings option on the website’s user interface. In addition, this was the message I received from my assigned counselor after I messaged him that I wish to cancel these services: | Hello Steven, I completely understand. I believe the charge represents a full months of service? You will need to speak directly with the customer service team to resolve this, unfortunately, I do not have any access to patient financial or subscription information. Please know that you are always welcome here in the future if you decide the cost is worthwhile. I am here for you. Best Andy I am a university student and money is incredibly tight for me, so to see $214.64 CAD withdrawn from my bank account just like that was devastating! I thought I was only paying on a weekly basis, and not much to my surprise, many other complaints towards this company are very similar if not exactly identical to my own complaints. That is, we all ultimately felt misled by how the company was advertising the billing information, and indeed it was very confusing upon registration. As the saying goes, “the devil is in the fine print”, which it clearly is in this case. After my registration, only then was I able to see a visible statement regarding a monthly charge, but I still didn’t see an immediate upfront charge, which again, many people who have submitted their credit card information to BetterHelp has experienced. My request is a full refund of the entire $214.64 CAD that I personally felt was withdrawn under circumstances that were unauthorized, especially since not one bit of counselling service was provided. | In addition, I would like to make it clear that I do not indeed to utilize any of BetterHelp’s services during the duration of the month, as I wish to use this in my argument for a full refund, and not a counter argument by the company saying something along the lines like, “we cannot issue you a full refund because you have used our services significantly”, or something like that. Had I known that I would have made a lump sum payment on the spot, I would have never have even submitted my debit card information to this company.

PREMATURE DEBIT HAPPY COMPANY. | The Free week is a lure to get credit card information. They charge high, very, very fast. For this kind of money you can get an hour face to face with a credible councillor. Do not buy. They do not refund what they have stolen even when you show them your request to stop the service.

Signed up for 7 day trial. I discontinued after about 4 days. They billed me on Paypal for $180! I put in a dispute on Paypal. They are in a city near me and I am going to drive down there and raise hell if they don’t refund. Btw, when I did try the trial, the therapist said I had an hour and a half to chat. After 5 minutes, she said I was out of time! | DO NOT NOT NOT GET RIPPED OFF BY THESE PEOPLE!

The day my 7 day trial was up I was out & 036;440. Yikes. That’s 400 more than the advertised rate. I feel like I could have gone to see someone in person for that- I picked BetterHelp because the & 036;40 was something I could financially manage -but I can’t do & 036;440 a week

These people are taking advantage of peoples vulnerability. They drag out conversations over days to seem innocent to gain your trust then they’ll start to take money out of your account using your credit card details you handed over for the free trial. They take large amounts over short period of time !

They ban anyone who expresses any kind of criticism on their Facebook page so that should give you an idea of what to expect from this company. You pay $45 a week for someone to occasionally message you every few days; I’m pretty sure there’s a ton of resources online where you can accomplish the same thing for free. Not to mention that it’s impossible to diagnose someone with a mental illness over the internet, so this isn’t in any way comparable to seeing a psychologist or a real counselor who knows certain signs to look for and can refer you to a psychiatrist if needed. This is just a blatant money-grab designed to prey on insecure and anxious millennials.

This company is unethical and should be boycotted and closed. They take advantage of people in fragile mental states and drag them into expensive counselling sessions. When you are already severely anxious or depressed you are vulnerable to suggestion, especially when it is offered by people claiming to be honest, certified counsellors. Do not sign up with them. Talk to a trusted friend or family member, or call the mental health resources in your area before you get sucked into this deplorable service. You are better off asking for help from a stranger than risking the kind of manipulation this company employs.

This is a sad scam. They are preying on those who are in need and making money off of them. I signed up with an account. I talked with a counselor but she didn’t tell me anything I already knew. There wasn’t a moment after the trial ended that I used that app again. They wouldn’t even let me send another message without entering my card info the first time. So yes they have my card information. After the trial days were up, they of course took out the payment but they took out more than what the option I selected.
