Valerie specializes in working with couples using the Gottman Method & adolescents/teens with trauma using Trauma Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Relationships can feel wonderful & fulfilling, & can also feel stressful & overwhelming. The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy is based on Dr. John Gottman’s research that began in the 1970’s & continues to this day. The research has focused on what makes relationships succeed or fail. From this research, Drs. John & Julie Gottman have created a method of therapy that emphasizes a “nuts-and-bolts” approach to improving a couples relationship and teaches specific tools to deepen friendships & intimacy. To productively manage conflicts, couples will be given methods to manage “resolvable problems” and will learn to dialogue about “gridlocked” (perpetual) issues. Each couple will work with Valerie to appreciate their relationship’s strengths & to gently navigate through its vulnerabilities.TF-CBT is backed by 18 years of research & 25 scientific studies. Treatment helps children respond better to trauma related symptoms & has a response rate of 80%. It can be used with many different traumas: physical abuse, sexual abuse, war violence, exposure to domestic violence, natural disasters, & traumatic grief.
